Three of the greatest cars ever made, the Lancia Stratos, the Lancia 037 and the Lancia S4 with Markku Alen and Juha Kankkunen. The Lancia S4 ECV is just icing on the cake!

The noises are just music.

This is Quattro S1 number RE15, one of two cars made with the PDK gearbox. The other, RE02, was raced by Walter Röhrl in the 1985 Lombard RAC rally but retired early after going off the road and rolling down a hillside in the dark of a night stage. The demise of Group B in 1986 meant RE15 would never race and was acquired by Röhrl and later sold.
Porsche had developed the Porsche Doppelkupplung, or PDK, dual-clutch gearbox for the 962 race car and through Dr Ferdinand Piech the technology found its way into the Audi Sport program. With upwards of 530bhp even Walter Röhrl admitted to being scared of the mighty S1 at times.

All of you out there that are into motorsport should watch this BBC documentary. It follows the Group B era of rallying, simultaneously motorsport’s crowning achievement and it’s darkest days. I’m lucky enough (and old enough!) to have lived through Group B, watching it unfold on TV. When the RAC rally came round each year my dad would take me to see the cars at the service stop as the mechanics worked on them. Their likes will never be seen again.

I’m not sure if people in other countries have means of watching BBC iPlayer streams but it’s worth your while trying to source a copy of it.
